I've always felt like this song was about worries, fears, and problems that you can never really leave behind and trying to escape from them momentarily even though you know in the back of you mind they are still there. In the first verse it gets into these problems, "wanting to be listened to" not "heard" and being bothered when others have the same name. Then after another verse it ends with "So let's think of something better" and the chorus starts. I think the "forest" represents a place to escape to and "singing" as something to tune out your problems with. When they mention the chorus being one that everybody knows I imagine it's because it's supposed to be "normal" and "expected" which is what he is trying to be by avoiding his problems and putting up a front. The "hands held higher" and "we'll" be on fire" part is the problems catching up to him. Then in the next verse he addresses them: "Quickly moving towards the storm Moving forward, torn into pieces Over reasons of what these storms are for I don't understand why everything I adore Takes a different form when I squint my eyes
"Slowtown" by twenty one pilots explores the desire to escape the fast-paced, hectic aspects of life and reconnect with a simpler, slower existence. The song reflects on the nostalgia of childhood and the carefree nature that often accompanies it.

In the verses, the lyrics express a longing for a different pace of life, where the narrator can fully embrace a slower, more relaxed environment. The mention of "laying down" and waking up in Slowtown symbolizes a desire to escape the pressures and responsibilities of the present and find solace in a place where time moves at a gentle, leisurely pace.

Have you ever done that, when you squint your eyes And your eyelashes make it look a little not right And when just enough light comes from just the right side And you find that you're not who you're supposed to be? This is not what you're supposed to see"
The chorus highlights the need for grounding and stability to prevent feeling overwhelmed. The act of putting on socks becomes symbolic of creating a barrier between the soul and the challenges of the world. The line "And I walk through my door just so I don't fall through the floor" suggests that the narrator uses their home as a safe space to regain balance and stability amidst the turmoil.

In these verses he has stepped out of the forest and is slowly coming back to the reality of his situation. That nothing is perfect and the harder he focuses on it, the worse the problems seem. After spending so much time away in his "forest" he has forgotten his own problems and when they suddenly show up again he panics and they seem 10x worse. Hence:
The second verse touches on the nostalgia of childhood, specifically recalling the innocence and daring spirit of youth. The reference to riding bikes, placing cards in the spokes, and mimicking traffic sounds illustrates a time of imaginative playfulness. However, the juxtaposition becomes apparent as the narrator states that they no longer engage in these activities and have lost touch with their own sense of wonder and joy.

"Please, remember me, I am supposed to be king of the king Devil swinging on the swing, something happened in my imagination The situation's becoming dire, my treehouse is on fire And for some reason I smell gas on my hands This is not what I had planned"
The bridge cries out for salvation from the fast-paced world, emphasizing the urgency of the desire for a slower, more meaningful existence. The repetition of "We're going too fast, fast, save us now" reflects the desperation and plea for rescue from the overwhelming rush of life.

In fear he runs back to his "forest" and continues to ignore his problems. [https://songmeanings.com/songs/view/3530822107858875305/]
Overall, "Slowtown" by twenty one pilots conveys a longing for a return to simplicity, a yearning to escape the complexities and speed of the modern world, and a reflection on the loss of innocence and childlike wonder. The song encourages listeners to evaluate their own lives and find ways to reconnect with a slower, more meaningful existence. [https://songmeanings.com/songs/view/3530822107858875305/]

|[Intro]
|[Verse 1]
Ooh, ooh
Hey, hey

Ooh, ooh

Ooh

[Verse 1]

I don't know why I feed on emotion

There's a stomach inside my brain

I don't wanna be heard, I wanna be listened to

Does it bother anyone else that someone else has your name?
Wouldn't it be great, great

Oh, does it bother anyone else that someone else has your name, your name?
If we could just lay down

[Pre-Chorus]
And wake up in Slowtown?

I scream, you scream
Today-day

We all scream, 'cause we're terrified
I wanna go away-way

Of what's around the corner
'Cause things are too fast now

We stay in place
I wanna be in Slowtown

'Cause we don't wanna lose our lives

So let's think of something better

[Chorus]
[Chorus]

Down in the forest, we'll sing a chorus
I put my socks on my feet

One that everybody knows
Just so that my soul won't fall through my toes

Hands held higher, we'll be on fire
And I walk through my door

Singing songs that nobody wrote
Just so I don't fall through the floor

[Verse 2]
[Verse 2]

My brain has given up, white flags are hoisted
I remember when my brother and other kids from neighboring houses

I took some food for thought, it might be poisoned
Would get together, I'd ride my bike and my brother would ride his

The stomach in my brain throws up onto the page
Put cards in our spokes and make our engines sound like traffic

Does it bother anyone else that someone else has your name?
When using Pokémon cards, please do not use the holographics

Does it bother anyone else that someone else has your name?
So bold and fearless in the risks we'd take

[Pre-Chorus]
Laugh in the face of gravity as its laws we'd break

I scream, you scream
On trampolines so high, we'd reach for the sky

We all scream, 'cause we're terrified
But I do not look up anymore, uh, and I don't know why

Of what's around the corner
[Chorus]

We stay in place
I put my socks on my feet

'Cause we don't wanna lose our lives
Just so that my soul won't fall through my toes

So let's think of something better (Better)
And I walk through my door

Oh
Just so I don't fall through the floor

Quickly moving towards the storm, moving forward, torn
We're going too fast, fast, save us

King of a kingdom, or swinging on a swing
(We're going too fast, fast, save us)

Something happened to my imagination
Just so I don't fall through the floor

|“Be Concerned” is about how Tyler has begun to question his faith. It appears that it documents a hard time Tyler went through, but eventually overcame, as Tyler’s faith still illuminates even his more recent lyrics that the band has released.
|‘Slowtown’ is the 4th track off the duo’s sophomore album, ''Regional at Best,''. The song is one of the four tracks that were not featured on the remastering project known as ''Vessel''. That said, the song’s ideas and main concept were re-worked into one of the band’s biggest hits and best-selling singles, “Stressed Out”.
Like a handful of other tracks from ''Regional at Best'', this song was not included in its 2013 remastered successor, ''Vessel''. While the song bears dense lyrical content, it has never been a huge fan-favorite, and it would make sense that Tyler wouldn’t want to constantly reflect on such a negative time in his life.
“Slowtown” tackles Tyler’s uneasiness concerning the consistent, constant march of time itself. This discomfort is expressed as a conduit of stress and anxiety, which society at large copes with through steady routine. A regimen that ultimately bores Tyler, causing a longing in him to revert to his youth; a time without strict routine. [https://genius.com/Twenty-one-pilots-be-concerned-lyrics]

“Be Concerned” also features Tyler’s friend Jocef of the Jocef Michael Band, an Ohio-based Christian group. [https://genius.com/Twenty-one-pilots-be-concerned-lyrics]

Slowtown is the 4th track on the album, Regional at Best

Background

"Slowtown" by twenty one pilots explores the desire to escape the fast-paced, hectic aspects of life and reconnect with a simpler, slower existence. The song reflects on the nostalgia of childhood and the carefree nature that often accompanies it.

In the verses, the lyrics express a longing for a different pace of life, where the narrator can fully embrace a slower, more relaxed environment. The mention of "laying down" and waking up in Slowtown symbolizes a desire to escape the pressures and responsibilities of the present and find solace in a place where time moves at a gentle, leisurely pace.

The bridge cries out for salvation from the fast-paced world, emphasizing the urgency of the desire for a slower, more meaningful existence. The repetition of "We're going too fast, fast, save us now" reflects the desperation and plea for rescue from the overwhelming rush of life.
