“Heavydirtysoul” opens with a genre-bending flurry of raps and industrial beats. It sets the tone for the rest of the album as an exploration of the Blurryface character created by singer Tyler Joseph.
The lyrics of “Stressed Out” are told in the first person, with the story being told by both the character Blurryface (a representation of Tyler’s insecurities) and an anxious Tyler feeling intense childhood nostalgia. The song is primarily about a wish to regain the innocence and carefree nature of childhood, before insecurities (i.e. Blurryface) existed.

The song was featured on the Madden NFL 16 and the WWE2K16 soundtracks.
It was released on April 27, 2015 as the third single from their second studio album, Blurryface. In February 2016, it managed to reach number two on the Hot 100, becoming their first single to reach that height.

The verses of this song are taken directly from Joseph’s “Street Poetry”.
The music video features Josh Dun and Tyler Joseph riding big-wheels and hanging out in their childhood bedrooms, suggesting a state of crippling nostalgia and perhaps even arrested development.

On April 30, 2021 Stressed Out was certified Diamond by the RIAA, their first Diamond certification.

|[Instrumental Intro]
|[Verse 1]
[Verse 1]
I wish I found some better sounds no one's ever heard

There's an infestation in my mind's imagination

I hope that they choke on smoke

'Cause I'm smokin' them out the basement
I wish I had a better voice that sang some better words

This is not rap, this is not hip-hop
I wish I found some chords in an order that is new

Just another attempt to make the voices stop
I wish I didn't have to rhyme every time I sang

Rappin' to prove nothin', just writin' to say somethin'
I was told, when I get older, all my fears would shrink

'Cause I wasn't the only one who wasn't rushin' to sayin' nothin'
But now I'm insecure, and I care what people think

This doesn't mean I lost my dream

It's just right now I got a really crazy mind to clean

[Pre-Chorus]
[Pre-Chorus]

Gangsters don't cry, therefore, therefore I'm (I'm)
My name's Blurryface and I care what you think

Mr. Misty-eyed, therefore I'm (I'm)
My name's Blurryface and I care what you think

[Chorus]
[Chorus]

Can you save, can you save my
Wish we could turn back time (Time, time) to the good old days

Can you save my heavydirtysoul?
When our momma sang us to sleep, but now we're stressed out (Out, oh)

Can you save, can you save my
Wish we could turn back time (Oh) to the good old days (Oh)

Can you save my heavydirtysoul?
When our momma sang us to sleep, but now we're stressed out (Out, out, out, out)

For me, for me (Uh)
[Post-Chorus]

Can you save my heavydirtysoul?
We're stressed out (Out, out, out, out)

For me, for me (Uh)

Can you save my heavydirtysoul?

[Verse 2]
[Verse 2]

Nah, I didn't understand a thing you said
Sometimes a certain smell will take me back to when I was young

If I didn't know better, I'd guess you're all already dead
How come I'm never able to identify where it's comin' from?

Mindless zombies walkin' around with a limp and a hunch
I'd make a candle out of it, if I ever found it

Sayin' stuff like, "You only live once"
Try to sell it, never sell out of it, I'd probably only sell one

You've got one time to figure it out
It'd be to my brother, 'cause we have the same nose

One time to twist and one time to shout
Same clothes, homegrown, a stone's throw from a creek we used to roam

One time to think and I say we start now
But it would remind us of when nothing really mattered

Sing it with me if you know what I'm talkin' about
Out of student loans and treehouse homes, we all would take the latter/ladder

[Pre-Chorus]
[Pre-Chorus]

Gangsters don't cry, therefore, therefore I'm (I'm)
My-my-my name's Blurryface and I care what you think

Mr. Misty-eyed, therefore I'm (I'm)
My name's Blurryface and I care what you think

[Chorus]
[Chorus]

Can you save, can you save my
Wish we could turn back time (Time, time) to the good old days

Can you save, can you save my
Wish we could turn back time (Oh) to the good old days (Oh)

Can you save my heavydirtysoul?
When our momma sang us to sleep, but now we're stressed out

For me, for me (Uh)
[Bridge]

Can you save my heavydirtysoul?
We used to play pretend, give each other different names

For me, for me (Uh)
We would build a rocket ship and then we'd fly it far away

Can you save my heavydirtysoul?
Used to dream of outer space, but now they're laughin' at our face

[Bridge]
Sayin', "Wake up, you need to make money," yeah

Death inspires me like a dog inspires a rabbit
We used to play pretend, give each other different names

Death inspires me like a dog inspires a rabbit
We would build a rocket ship and then we'd fly it far away

[Chorus]
Used to dream of outer space, but now they're laughin' at our face

Can you save, can you save my
Sayin', "Wake up, you need to make money," yeah

Can you save, can you save my, save my

|In a nutshell, “Heavydirtysoul” addresses how, although Tyler seems strong, he’s emotional and has depressing thoughts in his mind that he wishes weren’t there and how he wants to be saved.
|Rike, who did the design of the Blurryface album, said this about the Blurryface concept based on his conversations with Tyler:<blockquote>Blurryface isn’t that black and white. There are more layers to him than described. He can either be represented as sad, angry, evil, or deceptive. He has a tendency to draw you in, but only to pull you down. Tyler mentioned a vision of his mutilated face, and all of the dread associated with the elusive enemy. There is something vague about him, and something that cannot be completely described. No matter what your interpretation of Blurryface is, it’s safe to say that he remains something that we try to hide, and not show to the outside world.</blockquote>
When Tyler sang this song live, he didn’t get the type of positive reaction that he was hoping for. Because of this, he felt like he let his fans down and needed to rework the song for the band’s live performances. So, in a successful attempt to fix this, he changed the first verse to this:<blockquote>I wish I wrote a different song no one’s ever heard

I wish my mom would just admit she’s sick of every word

Music is Tyler’s way to deal with his problems, and throughout the 2015 album Blurryface he tells us he might not be alive if he didn’t do so.
Overplayed, overstayed, it was a smash hit

“Heavydirtysoul” reveals how Tyler thinks how he “didn’t lose his mind but he has a crazy mind to clean.”
Funny how overplayed songs sound like crap

A bigger purpose of the song is how people look up to him. The entire song compares himself to a gangster, or looked up figure in some people’s lives, whether it has a good or bad correlation. Usually, people think of role models as strong people, but the song is about Tyler and how people look up to him, but he’s not a hero. He’s a person who has feelings and expresses them.
I was told our true fans don’t like this song

In a 2019 interview, Andrew Donoho, the music video director, explained that the car falling apart symbolized the self-destructive nature of the ideas expressed in “Heavydirtysoul” and that similar to the car exploding after Tyler jumps out people need to put off such a mentality before they self-destruct completely. The wordings, like “heavy” and “dirty,” of the song and its title inspired the use of a car for the director.
But I hope they sing along, I hope they sing along </blockquote>
