I've always felt like this song was about worries, fears, and problems that you can never really leave behind and trying to escape from them momentarily even though you know in the back of you mind they are still there. In the first verse it gets into these problems, "wanting to be listened to" not "heard" and being bothered when others have the same name. Then after another verse it ends with "So let's think of something better" and the chorus starts. I think the "forest" represents a place to escape to and "singing" as something to tune out your problems with. When they mention the chorus being one that everybody knows I imagine it's because it's supposed to be "normal" and "expected" which is what he is trying to be by avoiding his problems and putting up a front. The "hands held higher" and "we'll" be on fire" part is the problems catching up to him. Then in the next verse he addresses them: "Quickly moving towards the storm Moving forward, torn into pieces Over reasons of what these storms are for I don't understand why everything I adore Takes a different form when I squint my eyes
The "someone at the door" is responsibility. It could be his own personal health, mental state, spiritual development, outside obligations, or really anything. Whatever is at the door is in need of attention, but he is too engrossed in his own thoughts and torments. He likes to entertain them, either in just a figure of speech sort of way (entertain a thought) or possibly through the songs that he sings.

Have you ever done that, when you squint your eyes And your eyelashes make it look a little not right And when just enough light comes from just the right side And you find that you're not who you're supposed to be? This is not what you're supposed to see"
Basically the metaphor is that he locks himself up in a house of negative thoughts and shuts out the world. [https://songmeanings.com/songs/view/3530822107858886311/ <nowiki>[1]</nowiki>]

In these verses he has stepped out of the forest and is slowly coming back to the reality of his situation. That nothing is perfect and the harder he focuses on it, the worse the problems seem. After spending so much time away in his "forest" he has forgotten his own problems and when they suddenly show up again he panics and they seem 10x worse. Hence:

"Please, remember me, I am supposed to be king of the king Devil swinging on the swing, something happened in my imagination The situation's becoming dire, my treehouse is on fire And for some reason I smell gas on my hands This is not what I had planned"

In fear he runs back to his "forest" and continues to ignore his problems. [https://songmeanings.com/songs/view/3530822107858875305/]

[Verse 1: Tyler Joseph]

We all are stranger creatures than when we all started out as kids

Culture forbids

We have romantic fantasies about what dying truly is

Ooh, ooh
Fall off the grid

Ooh
[Pre-Chorus: Tyler Joseph]

[Verse 1]
We live for the night's decor

I don't know why I feed on emotion
It reveals what we dream of

There's a stomach inside my brain
[Chorus: Tyler Joseph]

I don't wanna be heard, I wanna be listened to
I know there's someone at the door

Does it bother anyone else that someone else has your name?
They called for help, of this I'm sure

Oh, does it bother anyone else that someone else has your name, your name?
But do I want to say goodbye

[Pre-Chorus]
To all the glowing eyes?

I scream, you scream
I'm holding on to what I know

We all scream, 'cause we're terrified
And what I know, I must let go

Of what's around the corner
But I would rather play a song

We stay in place
For the eyes to sing along

'Cause we don't wanna lose our lives
[Post-Chorus: Tyler Joseph]

So let's think of something better
La, la, da, da

[Chorus]
La, la, da, da, da

Down in the forest, we'll sing a chorus
La, la, da, da

One that everybody knows
La, la, da (The eyes to sing along)

Hands held higher, we'll be on fire
La, la, da, da (Long)

Singing songs that nobody wrote
La, la, da, da, da (Long)

[Verse 2]
La, la, da, da

My brain has given up, white flags are hoisted
La, la, da

I took some food for thought, it might be poisoned
[Interlude: Tyler Joseph ''with James Truslow'']

The stomach in my brain throws up onto the page
''Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh''

Does it bother anyone else that someone else has your name?
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

Does it bother anyone else that someone else has your name?
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh

I scream, you scream
[Verse 2: Tyler Joseph & James Truslow]

We all scream, 'cause we're terrified
We all know somebody who knows somebody who's doing great

Of what's around the corner
I know some people who know people who are flying straight

We stay in place
But I'll kindly enter into rooms of depression

'Cause we don't wanna lose our lives
While ceiling fans and idle hands will take my life again

So let's think of something better (Better)
[Pre-Chorus: Tyler Joseph]

Oh
We live for the night's decor

[Chorus]
It reveals what we dream of

Down in the forest, we'll sing a chorus
[Chorus: Tyler Joseph]

Hands held higher, we'll be on fire
They called for help, of this I'm sure

Singing songs that nobody wrote
But do I want to say goodbye

[Bridge]
To all the glowing eyes?

Quickly moving towards the storm, moving forward, torn
I'm holding on to what I know

Into pieces over reasons of what these storms are for
And what I know, I must let go

I don't understand why everything I adore
But I would rather play a song

Takes a different form when I squint my eyes
For the eyes to sing along

Have you ever done that? When you squint your eyes
[Bridge: Tyler Joseph ''with James Truslow'']

And your eyelashes make it look a little not right
This room is far too dark for us to stay around

And then when just enough light comes from just the right side
Redemption's not that far, and darkness is going down

And you find you're not who you're supposed to be?
''This room is far too dark, for us to stay around''

This is not what you're supposed to see
''Redemption's not that far, and darkness is going down''

Please, remember me?
La, la, da, da

I am supposed to be
La, la, da, da, da

King of a kingdom, or swinging on a swing
La, la, da, da

Something happened to my imagination
La, la, da, da

The situation's becoming dire
La, la, da, da

My tree house is on fire
La, la, da, da, da

And for some reason I smell gas on my hands
La, la, da, da

This is not what I had planned
La, la, da

This is not what I had planned
[Chorus: Tyler Joseph]

Down in the forest, we'll sing a chorus (Forest, chorus)
I'm holding on to what I know

Hands held higher, we'll be on fire
And what I know, I must let go

Down in the forest, we'll sing a chorus

One that everybody knows, yeah
Their eyes will sing along, long, long

Hands held higher, we'll be on fire
Make them stop

|“Forest” is about conquering inner demons through music and community. It’s easily considered to be a fan favorite, and is frequently played live by the duo.
|With an interesting, upbeat instrumental, Tyler delivers his vocals on “Glowing Eyes” in a similarly cheerful manner. The lyrics however tell a much darker story.
The song was later featured as a bonus track on the band’s 2013 album ''Vessel'' along with various other songs from ''Regional at Best''.
The song explores topics such as sociology, depression, apathy, and the alluring pull that the idea of death can have on an individual. The “glowing eyes” seem to represent a form of negativity of which the narrator is reluctant to let go of (addiction). This wish for the preservation of those things that cause our sadness may seem strange, but is actually rather common among the depressed.

The band released a small excerpt of the song which Tyler sings while walking through a city. It includes the main chorus of the song sung before and after the bridge which is sung in a similar style to Tyler’s “Street Poetry.[https://genius.com/Twenty-one-pilots-be-concerned-lyrics]
Regardless of the rumors, Josh Dun is ''not'' singing the backup vocals on this track. It was confirmed that the credit belongs to James Truslow, an old friend of Tyler’s. [https://genius.com/Twenty-one-pilots-glowing-eyes-lyrics <nowiki>[2]</nowiki>]

Glowing Eyes is the 7th track on the album, Regional at Best as well as the 13th track on Vessel Bonus Track Version

Background

The "someone at the door" is responsibility. It could be his own personal health, mental state, spiritual development, outside obligations, or really anything. Whatever is at the door is in need of attention, but he is too engrossed in his own thoughts and torments. He likes to entertain them, either in just a figure of speech sort of way (entertain a thought) or possibly through the songs that he sings.

Basically the metaphor is that he locks himself up in a house of negative thoughts and shuts out the world. [1]
