The "someone at the door" is responsibility. It could be his own personal health, mental state, spiritual development, outside obligations, or really anything. Whatever is at the door is in need of attention, but he is too engrossed in his own thoughts and torments. He likes to entertain them, either in just a figure of speech sort of way (entertain a thought) or possibly through the songs that he sings.
<blockquote>The whole concept of that song is that I feel that humans are always struggling when it comes to purpose, trying to figure out their purpose is, what purpose even is, what’s the point, justifying your own existence.

Basically the metaphor is that he locks himself up in a house of negative thoughts and shuts out the world. [https://songmeanings.com/songs/view/3530822107858886311/ <nowiki>[1]</nowiki>]
A lot of kids and people my age struggle with “what’s the point,” and with the logo, what it really means is it’s an encouragement. When someone asks me what the logo means to me, the logo means something to me because I made it mean something to me. That’s the point. The point is that I created something that only I understand and whether or not I decide to disclose the meaning of it, that’s the beginning of purpose for me.

The meaning of purpose for me, is by creating something, if it be by writing lyrics, painting a picture, by expressing yourself through art…if it’s photography or music or theater, or whatever it is. It doesn’t have to be artistic, but if you create something and only you know the meaning of it, that’s the beginning of purpose for you.

When you’re in the room by yourself trying to decide whether to stay alive, you can tell yourself “I should probably stay alive because I’m the only one who knows the meaning of that thing,” so the logo is an encouragement for people to create. That’s what it means.</blockquote>–Tyler Joseph via [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klU6dJUPAVI&t=254s <nowiki>Youtube interview [1]</nowiki>]

[Verse 1: Tyler Joseph]
[Verse 1: Tyler Joseph]

We all are stranger creatures than when we all started out as kids
Nobody thinks what I think

Culture forbids
Nobody dreams when they blink

We have romantic fantasies about what dying truly is
Think things on the brink of blasphemy

Fall off the grid
I'm my own shrink

[Pre-Chorus: Tyler Joseph]
Think things are after me, I'm my catastrophe

We live for the night's decor
At my kitchen sink

It reveals what we dream of
You don't know what that means

[Chorus: Tyler Joseph]
Because a kitchen sink to you is not a kitchen sink to me

I know there's someone at the door
Okay, friend?

They called for help, of this I'm sure
Are you searching for purpose?

But do I want to say goodbye
Then write something, yeah, it might be worthless

To all the glowing eyes?
Then paint something, and it might be wordless

I'm holding on to what I know
Pointless curses, nonsense verses

And what I know, I must let go
You'll see purpose start to surface

But I would rather play a song
No one else is dealing with your demons

For the eyes to sing along
Meaning maybe defeating them could be the beginning

[Post-Chorus: Tyler Joseph]
Of your meaning, friend

La, la, da, da
[Chorus: Tyler Joseph]

La, la, da, da, da
Go away, go away

La, la, da, da
Go away, go away

La, la, da (The eyes to sing along)
Leave me alone, leave me alone

La, la, da, da (Long)
Leave me alone, leave me alone

La, la, da, da, da (Long)
Leave me alone

La, la, da, da
Leave me alone

La, la, da
Leave me alone

[Interlude: Tyler Joseph ''with James Truslow'']
[Verse 2: Tyler Joseph]

''Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh''
Nobody thinks what you think, no one

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Empathy might be on the brink of extinction

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
They will play a game

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
And say they know what you're going through

[Verse 2: Tyler Joseph & James Truslow]
And I tried to come up with an artistic way to say

We all know somebody who knows somebody who's doing great
They don't know you

I know some people who know people who are flying straight
And neither do I

But I'll kindly enter into rooms of depression
So here's a prime example of a stand-up guy who

While ceiling fans and idle hands will take my life again
Hates what he believes and loves it at the same time

[Pre-Chorus: Tyler Joseph]
Here's my brother

We live for the night's decor
And his head's screwed up, but that's all right

It reveals what we dream of
[Bridge: Zack Joseph]

[Chorus: Tyler Joseph]
Time gains momentum the moment when I'm living in 'em

I know there's someone at the door
I'm winning a momentary, sinning a moment passing after

They called for help, of this I'm sure
A re-beginning moment's mending memories

But do I want to say goodbye
Pretending enemies are friends of me

To all the glowing eyes?
Sending me straight to bending me

I'm holding on to what I know
My bad behavior but I bet I could have been a better man

And what I know, I must let go
Copy and paste caught me, and copy, better rhymes bother me

But I would rather play a song
The better the rhythm, the badder I am

For the eyes to sing along
But I bet I'll battle with 'em battle

[Bridge: Tyler Joseph ''with James Truslow'']
Better I am, gamblin' man, better bet I am a gambling man, I am?

This room is far too dark for us to stay around

Redemption's not that far, and darkness is going down

|With an interesting, upbeat instrumental, Tyler delivers his vocals on “Glowing Eyes” in a similarly cheerful manner. The lyrics however tell a much darker story.
|When asked about the famous symbol that has come to represent the band, '''<nowiki>|-/</nowiki>''', frontman Tyler Joseph told interviewers that the meaning of that symbol has a lot to do with “Kitchen Sink,” an extremely important song to him.
The song explores topics such as sociology, depression, apathy, and the alluring pull that the idea of death can have on an individual. The “glowing eyes” seem to represent a form of negativity of which the narrator is reluctant to let go of (addiction). This wish for the preservation of those things that cause our sadness may seem strange, but is actually rather common among the depressed.
"Something happened to me at a kitchen sink. There was something I realized. That song ‘Kitchen Sink’ and that reference means something to me. But if I were to tell you exactly what that meant, those times where I need the motivation to continue forward, I wouldn’t have that as part of my motivation. In my darkest hour, when I’m trying to figure out what to do with myself, there’s that thing, that song…If I were to no longer continue forward, there would be no one there to explain this thing. I will not tell you what a kitchen sink is to me because it represents something that only I understand." [https://genius.com/Twenty-one-pilots-kitchen-sink-lyrics <nowiki>[2]</nowiki>]

Regardless of the rumors, Josh Dun is ''not'' singing the backup vocals on this track. It was confirmed that the credit belongs to James Truslow, an old friend of Tyler’s.[https://genius.com/Twenty-one-pilots-be-concerned-lyrics]

Background

The whole concept of that song is that I feel that humans are always struggling when it comes to purpose, trying to figure out their purpose is, what purpose even is, what’s the point, justifying your own existence.

That’s what it means.
