Having been acquainted since high school, [[Tyler Joseph]], [[Nick Thomas]] and [[Chris Salih]] formed the band "''[[Twenty One Pilots]]''" in 2009. The group released their debut album, ''[[Twenty One Pilots (album)|Twenty One Pilots]]'' the same year. Both Salih and Thomas left the band on good terms in mid 2011. Not long after, new found drummer [[Josh Dun]] joined the band. At the time, Dun was working at guitar center with Salih. Salih brought in a CD with three Twenty One PIlots songs for Dun to listen to. Dun stated that he loved the songs and wanted to see Twenty One Pilots live, soon attending a show at the [[Newport Music Hall]]. By this time, they had developed a presence in the music industry. The last show they played without a record label was at the [[Newport Music Hall]] in Columbus, Ohio to a crowd of 1,800.
