Vessel debuted at number 58 on the Billboard 200 chart, but reached number 21 in 2016. History

Prehistory (20011-2012)

Having been acquainted since high school, Tyler Joseph, Nick Thomas and Chris Salih formed the band "Twenty One Pilots" in 2009. The band released their debut album, Twenty One Pilots the same year. Both Salih and Thomas left the band on good terms in mid 2011. Not long after, new found drummer Josh Dun joined the band. At the time, Dun was working at guitar center with Salih. Salih brought in a CD with three Twenty One Pilots songs for Dun to listen to. Dun stated that he loved the songs and wanted to see Twenty One Pilots live, soon attending a show at the Newport Music Hall. Dun approached Joseph after the show, they kept in touch and Dun officially joined not long after[3]. Twenty One Pilots, now consisting of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun, released Regional at Best in 2011. June of that year the pair played their first out of state show, though it was shut down by the police after one song due to a noise complaint[4]. By this time, they had developed a presence in the music industry. The last show they played without a record label was at the Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio to a crowd of 1,800. The band was officially signed by Fueled by Ramen in 2012 [5]. July of that same year, together they released the Three Songs EP, which features the tracks "Guns for Hands", "Migraine", and "Ode to Sleep"[6]. All of these are featured on their next album, Vessel.

2012-2014

Vessel was made available to listen on December 18, 2012 through Entertainment Weekly. Vessel was soon officially released through their new label, Fueled by Ramen on January 8, 2013[7]. The first tour after being signed by Fueled by Ramen was the Mostly November Tour, starting October of 2012 and ending that same year [8]. 2014 saw the end of the group of concerts know as 'Trip for Concerts'[9] that had started in late 2011[10]. The first tour that started after the release of Vessel was the Quiet is Violent World Tour in September of 2014, ending later that year[11].

2014-present

On Jan 8 2023, Twenty One Pilots hosted the Vessel 10th Anniversary Variety Stream. This stream was hosted on the 10 year anniversary of Vessel, also being used as charity stream for the Make a Wish Foundation. The livestream lasted about 3 hours, during which they performed all Vessel songs, rewatched old videos, told stories about the album and more. They had a goal of raising $10,000; they were able to raise over $43,395, all of which went to the Make a Wish Foundation. [12]
