Vessel is the third studio album by American musical duo Twenty One Pilots, which was released on January 8, 2013. It is the band's first album released via Fueled by Ramen, and is their major-label debut album.

Vessel debuted at number 58 on the Billboard 200 chart, but reached number 21 in 2016. As of July 2019, the album has sold over two million equivalent album units in the U.S.[1] All of its tracks have been certified at least Gold by the RIAA, which made Twenty One Pilots the first group or artist to achieve this feat with two separate albums[2].

History

Prehistory

Having been acquainted since high school, Tyler Joseph, Nick Thomas and Chris Salih formed the band "Twenty One Pilots" in 2009. The group released their debut album, Twenty One Pilots the same year. Both Salih and Thomas left the band on good terms. Not long after, new found drummer Josh Dun joined the band. At the time, Dun was working at guitar center with Salih. Salih brought in a CD with three Twenty One PIlots songs for Dun to listen to. Dun stated that he loved the songs and wanted to see Twenty One Pilots live, soon attending a show at the Newport Music Hall. Dun approached Joseph after the show, they have kept in touch and have since become great friends and musicians together[3]. Twenty One Pilots, now consisting of Joseph and Dun, released Regional at Best in 2011. June of that year, the pair played their first out of state show, though was shut down by the police after one song due to a noise complaint[4]. By this time, they had developed a presence in the music industry. The last show they played without a record label was at the Newport Music Hall in Columbus, Ohio to a crowd of 1,800. The band was officially signed by Fueled by Ramen in 2012 [5]. That summer, together they released the Three Songs EP, which featured the tracks "Guns for Hands", "Migraine", and "Ode to Sleep"[6], all of which are featured on their next album, Vessel. Vessel was made available to listen on December 18, 2012 through Entertainment Weekly. Vessel was soon officially released through their new label, Fueled by Ramen on January 8, 2013[7].
